Painter Toshiaki Watanabe
Toshiaki Watanabe 1937-2005
Born in Shizuoka Prefecture. He aspired to become a painter in the 4th grade of elementary school, and began painting in earnest in oil during his childhood and adolescence, and has continued to paint on his own ever since. During the hardships he endured as a painter, he developed a deep interest in the Buddhist worldview, and began to paint sumisai (Chinese ink painting), poetry, and calligraphy, which he expresses in both pictures and words.
In 1980, he made woodblock prints based on 100 haiku by the drifting haiku poet Taneda Yamatohka. After this, he stopped his activities toward the central art world and began to focus on the lives of the people.
He called himself a "Painter and Craftsman" for the wide variety of his artistic expression, including oil paintings, woodblock prints, and ink paintings, as well as stone carvings, painted ceramics, and garden works.
